The backdrop of a Salkantay trek

The city is set upon a ridge over the Urubamba Valley, deep within the jungle-covered mountains north west of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Machu Picchu trips are nothing if not eventful – a  trek over the high pass of Salkantay Mountain is a truly remarkable experience, which crosses a diverse range of terrain along the way. The final reward for trekking Machu Picchu is a firsthand experience of an impeccably preserved ancient city, on par with the Great Pyramids of Giza in terms of beauty and architectural achievement.
