Climb Kilimanjaro: a trek to the Roof of Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most impressive sights in Africa and climbing it is one of the all time great achievements. Rising majestically from a rolling plain close to the Indian Ocean, Kilimanjaro soars to a chilling 5,895m high peak (well above the cloud line).

It’s the highest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing mountain in the world. The feeling you get as you climb Kilimanjaro and watch the sun rise over the vast African plains is truly an incredible experience.

Kilimanjaro’s location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean and its great size and height strongly influence the climate, vegetation, animal life and the climbing conditions. It also creates its own weather system affecting the surrounding rainfall pattern, which means that hiking Kilimanjaro requires immense stamina, persistence and a waterproof resilience.

Whether you are planning to do a Kilimanjaro charity trek, or simply a taking on personal challenge, this will be a truly awe-inspiring adventure.

You will climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route – otherwise known as the camping route, the longer route, the more scenic route and the favoured route for most people who attempt the ascent to the Roof of Africa.

As an ethical tour operator we work hard to ensure that the impact of your Kilimanjaro trek is minimal. We have found that setting off from the Machame ridge line provides a unique blend of scenery, acclimatization time and low impact camping upon the conservation area within which Mount Kilimanjaro is set.

Starting off at Machame Gate the route ascends up the Machame ridge to the Shira Plateau offering spectacular views of both Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow capped summit and the western views over to Mount Meru and the Maasailand highlands.

After crossing the Shira Plateau the route descends towards Barranco Camp, before rising towards Barafu: your final stop before the summit attempt is made. Hiking Kilimanjaro via this route gives you the best possible chance of summiting and is a truly spectacular and rewarding journey to Africa’s highest peak.

Many people choose to do a Kilimanjaro charity trek and we welcome groups of all sizes. Hiking Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime challenge – book today to ensure your place on one of our upcoming adventures.
